Nutrition Therapy

Establishing a balanced and empowered relationship with food and is incredibly challenging. Our nutrition services, led by Maggie Lefavor, RD, LDN serves not only as guide toward healing but also the assurance that an expert dietitian is by your side every step of the way.

Whether you’re in the beginning stages of recovering from an eating disorder, looking for ways to manage a health condition, or simply hoping to develop a more holistic lens around nutrition, we’re here to create a treatment plan that works for you.

Our Nutrition Philosophy

Through evidence-based nutritional care, our nutrition services aim to challenge any myths or misconceptions you may have about nutrition and foster a more compassionate and accepting relationship between you and your body. Your relationship with food and your body is one of the longest relationships you will have in your life.

Nutrition plays a significant role in how we care for and treat our bodies. Eating disorders, disordered eating, health conditions, fluctuating hormones, and society’s obsession with diets can all disrupt your association with food and separate you from a trusting connection with your body. With the support of a dietitian, you can begin to rebuild that trust and move toward a balanced and intuitive approach to eating.

Here at Hilltop, we don’t label foods as good or bad. Instead, we believe that all foods fit and have a purpose.

So, when meeting with our dietitian, you’ll be met with compassion and collaboration. We walk with you every step of the way. Nonjudgment and openness are the foundation of our care.

All dietitian appointments are rooted in the following principles…

  • Weight inclusivity
  • Anti-diet
  • Health at Every Size
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Individualized

Compassionate & Collaborative Approach

Our approach to nutrition services is client-centered, ensuring that appointments are tailored to your unique perspective and needs. We want to collaborate with you so that treatment is individualized to meet your goals. We use open-ended questions, affirmative listening, and reflection to make sure we understand your story. This ensures we can guide you toward food freedom in a way that feels validating and supportive.

During dietitian appointments, we will work together to address the shame you’re carrying, identify triggers, and relearn how to nourish your body in a way that supports your healing and self-acceptance. Our experts are here to guide you back to your innate wisdom, allowing you to reconnect with food, eating, and everything your body is capable of doing.

Hilltop’s approach is…

  • Collaborative
  • Motivational
  • Focused on food freedom
  • Client-centered
  • Nonjudgemental

How Can a Dietitian Help?

A dietitian can address nutrition-related problems by offering nutritional education, guidance, and emotional support, all to help you heal your relationship with food and your body. Working with one of our dietitians can help you understand the integral role that food and nutrition play in your health and recovery. Through our guidance, you can expand your mindset around eating and shift how you nourish and relate to your body, so that true freedom can be achieved.

Where Do I Start?

Taking a step toward change can bring up a lot of questions and emotions. Hilltop is dedicated to meeting you where you’re at and walking alongside you. We want you to feel supported and cared for throughout your journey. That’s why we offer free 15-minute consultation calls for prospective clients. During these calls, one of our expert team members can answer any questions, address your concerns, and guide you through the initial steps of meeting with a dietitian. We’d love to hear from you.

Specialty Areas

Eating Disorders

We specialize in treating individuals who struggle with a relationship with food and who may use unhealthy methods and behaviors that lead to shame and guilt surrounding body and weight. We help individuals who have difficulty maintaining consistency in their personal relationships and often food, body, and emotions get in the way. There are multiple approaches to treating eating disorders, including psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy for eating disorders (CBT-E), thought and emotion identification and regulation, thought defusion, exposure therapy (ERP), the development of effective behavioral skills, family-based treatment (FBT), mindfulness-based approaches (MB-CBT), somatic therapies, and more. Individual therapy utilizes these modalities and approaches. If you are ready to reduce stress surrounding food and your body, we can help.

Anxiety

We work with helping individuals who experience intense thoughts that feel impossible to slow down. When everything feels scary, we can help lessen the intensity of obsessions, panic attacks, debilitating self-loathing, feelings of isolation, and negative relationships. If you’re struggling with anxiety or depression, there is hope. Individual therapy can provide you with the skills you need to find a sense of calmness and freedom. You don’t have to live in a state of anxiety or depression. You deserve to heal.

PTSD and trauma can cause you to feel scattered and isolated. This highlights how difficult it can be to find connection when flashbacks and anxiety run its course and take charge of the situation, leaving those who struggle alone and afraid of connecting with others. This can be worked on and we do this at Hilltop Behavioral health in the state of NJ, near Summit.

PTSD

We understand the complexity of trauma and the impact it can have on an individual’s mental and emotional well-being. We work with individuals who may be experiencing symptoms of PTSD, including flashbacks, avoidance behaviors, negative changes in mood and cognition, changes in alertness and reactivity, and feelings of guilt or shame. These symptoms can be overwhelming and debilitating, but taking that first step towards healing and working through the trauma is the key to finding strength and resilience.
