Brian Pollack, LCSW, CEDS-C – Eating Disorder Therapist in New Jersey

Brian Pollack, LCSW, CEDS-C is a licensed clinical social worker and one of the only male Certified Eating Disorder Specialists with Consultant-level designation in the country. He is the Founder and Clinical Director of Hilltop Behavioral Health, a specialty eating disorder practice in Summit, NJ – serving clients in-person across the tri-state area and via telehealth in 21+ states. Hilltop Behavioral Health is Summit NJ’s dedicated eating disorder clinic, offering specialty outpatient care for adults, teens, and families in person and via telehealth across 21+ states.

Most therapists treat eating disorders. Few specialize in them.

What Brian Specializes In

Brian works with people whose relationship with food is tangled up with something deeper – identity, control, self-worth, body image, anxiety, depression, executive functioning, family. His specialties reflect where that intersection shows up most clearly.

  • Male eating disorders – anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and restrictive eating in men and boys
  • Family-Based Treatment (FBT) – evidence-based treatment for adolescents and young adults
  • Muscle dysmorphia – body image distortion and compulsive exercise in male-identified clients
  • Athlete eating disorders – competitive and recreational athletes, sport-specific pressures
  • ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) – across all ages
  • Virtual eating disorder therapy

Few male clinicians hold all of these specialties. Brian has spent a decade building deep expertise in each of these specific presentations.

Why Credentials Matter Here

There are therapists who treat eating disorders. Then there are certified eating disorder specialists. The difference is significant, and rare. Brian holds the CEDS-C, the highest credential available through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP), and is one of a small number of male clinicians in the country to hold it.

He is also the first and only male therapist in New Jersey certified in Family-Based Treatment through the Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders (FBT certification since 2017) – the gold standard approach for adolescents with eating disorders.

Every Hilltop clinician works under Brian’s supervision toward their own CEDS credential. When you work with anyone at Hilltop, you’re working within a practice built on specialist-level standards.

Training and Clinical Background

Brian’s career began at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he worked across inpatient, PHP, and IOP levels of care – sharpening assessment, diagnosis, case management, and crisis intervention with some of the most complex presentations in eating disorder treatment.

He holds an MSW from New York University and has been treating eating disorders in outpatient specialty practice since founding Hilltop. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at Yeshiva University, teaching Diagnosis and Clinical Applications of Eating Disorders.

He has been invited to speak nationally by the International Association for Eating Disorder Professionals, the NYC Department of Health, Princeton University, and Veritas Collaborative, and has been featured in Business Insider, HuffPost, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and on NPR and Good Day Philadelphia.

He is a former board member of the National Association for Males with Eating Disorders and a professional member of NASW, IAEDP, and the Academy for Eating Disorders.

Evidence-Based Treatment Approaches

Brian’s treatment is protocol-driven. He draws on the following approaches depending on each client’s presentation:

  • Family-Based Treatment (FBT / Maudsley Approach) – gold standard for adolescent eating disorders
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Enhanced (CBT-E) – specifically designed for eating disorder treatment
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) – emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness
  • ARFID protocols (CBT-AR) – structured exposure and nutritional rehabilitation
  • Psychodynamic Therapy – insight-oriented work on underlying patterns and core beliefs
  • Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) – nervous system regulation for sensory-sensitive clients

In addition to individual therapy, Hilltop offers nutrition therapy, group therapy, and coordinated care with physicians and dietitians.
